Eiger Fences His Way to the World Stage

While many are planning a well-earned break this bank holiday weekend, one of Cornwall’s most promising young athletes will be in London, training with the GB squad in preparation for the Senior World Cup in Madrid this May.

Eiger, an 18-year-old sabre fencer from Constantine, has been supported by the Young & Talented Cornwall Fund for the past three years. Although he was unable to attend this year’s awards evening, he shared his thanks with the panel, recognising the impact the fund has had on his journey so far.

Having only taken up fencing five years ago, Eiger has made remarkable progress. He rose from regional to national level within a year, before moving on to compete in European tournaments. Now, he is fencing in World Cups, representing Great Britain against the top-ranked fencers across the globe. He is currently ranked 2nd in the U20 Great Britain Men’s Sabre category.

Last summer, Eiger sustained a serious hand injury, breaking two bones and missing the U20 Nationals in September. Since returning to training in the autumn, he has shown exceptional determination, climbing back into the top rankings just three months later.

Funding from the Young & Talented Cornwall Fund has helped Eiger compete at the Commonwealth Championships in New Zealand and the World Championships in China and purchase essential kit for international competitions.

We look forward to following Eiger’s progress as he continues his international career. As well as welcoming him back to Cornwall when the season allows.
