Thanks to the Spirit of Trevithick Award, student researcher Lily Butler travelled to Thailand to take part in the International Student Science Fair (ISSF) – a global event bringing together young scientists to share research, ideas, and cultural experiences.

Lily has been developing her research into the environmental impact of disposable vaping, a pressing issue with implications for public health, sustainability, and environmental policy. The award enabled her to showcase this work on an international stage, while also exploring recent innovations in surgery and medicine.

Reflecting on the experience, Lily said:

“Attending the International Student Science Fair was an incredible experience for me which allowed me to showcase our research on an international stage. We first attended the opening ceremony, which the Princess of Thailand attended and featured the MWIT symphony orchestra. During the week we also presented our research to a panel of judges and an audience of other contestants, as well as presenting the research poster during a poster session.”

But the event was about far more than competition.

“ISSF is not only about showcasing research, but also about sharing cultures,” Lily explained. “During the excursions I was able to visit the Bangkok Hospital Research Centre and Wat Arun temple – both amazing opportunities to learn about Thai culture and meet new friends. There was also an evening where all attending countries performed a short show about their culture.”

Her team’s project was recognised with the Spark of Inspiration Award, given to projects that show exceptional innovation and the potential to contribute to future scientific research.

“Overall attending this event was a life-changing experience for me,” Lily reflected. “I have so many fond memories and have made connections with people all over the world I hope to collaborate with in the future.”

For Lily, the journey to Thailand was not just about presenting research – it was about gaining inspiration, forging international connections, and returning with fresh insights that will drive her work forward in both environmental science and medicine.

The Spirit of Trevithick Award is designed to support young innovators like Lily, enabling them to pursue opportunities that extend beyond the classroom. By providing financial and professional support, the award helps nurture the next generation of scientists, engineers, and medical researchers.
